"THE CLEARING"

Always playing with light and the subtlety's of what happens has such a great fascination that at times it is irresistible not to paint. "PATENT LEATHER & POLKA DOTS"

I entered the office and signed in.  As I turned to sit I spotted her, she was dressed to kill. I took a seat, picked up a magazine and pretended to read but couldn’t take my eyes off her. Her gaze never left the window.  After a time a door opened to my right and a soft voice called out into the waiting room… “Ms Greenfield” she stood up and with grace glided across the floor.  Passing me she nodded, I smiled; she was wearing “Gardenia” probably my favorite perfume. I sat for a few minutes then the receptionist called out to me, she told me this and that with politeness, I thanked her nodding my head up and down showing I understood. Turning to leave I stopped to looked out the window, smiling to myself I thought, oh well, it was a nice encounter anyway. Oil on 8x6 Birch paneling, mounted on a varnished wooden box:  (Sold)

"LAST BUS OUT"

Yes! I am posting this again.. I did some changes, like added to people behind the bus and across the street over there, two more, punched up the motel sign, and repainted the sky... Other then that, its the same painting... : )

"LAST OF WINTER"

Heading back down I stopped to take one last look at the end of winter this year.  I felt the changes in the air coming, not just with the season, but many things, I think what I'm feeling is an anticipation of things to come. "THE ROAD TO TUCUMCARI"

Oh! How I do love New Mexico. Over the years I have painted the “Blue Swallow” so many times, yet with each time, it’s like painting it for the first time. There is always something new to discover in the process, for one the skies in New Mexico are fantastic, one couples that with great natural and manmade architecture and you cant loss playing with the senses. In painting this, I really had little to do with it, this great motel is setting there with this sky as its backdrop I felt my job was done, after all I got the paints, couple a brushes, Birch wood panel and voilà a painting… The "Blue Swallow Motel" is on Rout 66, a must stop for any traveler. "SUNSET & SHADOWS"

I painted this in oils much like I would a water color painting using lots of transparent colors giving a very soft feel to it.  Being intrigued by the shadows and light flowing through the trees. made for a delightful journey for me.  The size of this is 6x6 inches painted on Birch wood that has been mounted on a wooden box that I varnish.  (Sold)

"COCKTAILS ANYONE ?"

This is so L.A. its silly. This is probably the fourth time I have painted the "Frolic Room" I painted this as a large canvas to my small works for this site.  It always remains a fun subject to capture.   Those living in LA or Hollywood knows this place well.  I cant wait for it to dry so I can varnish making the colors really pop.  If it doesn't sell here on the site I know it is a goner with my show in "Beverly Hills" this May or my summer show in  Laguna Beach at the "Festival of the Arts" coming up July1.  This 6x6" painting is on one of my Birch wood varnished box's:    (SOLD) 

"SIDE STREED"

Driving around at night was wonderful, I had no idea of where we were going at all.  It was like being lost and didn't care, I just sat back and clicked my camera at shadows and stuff of the night.  The coloring in this painting is a deep gray blue background  giving the lights and glare  a warm glow.  The painting is 6x6" on my Birch wood varnished box:

"PLAY IT AGAIN SAM"

This is another of my B&W paintings.  The photo I used is from a fellow friend and photographer BRECK ROTHAGE, we are both in the  Laguna Art Festival.  Checkout what he is about.    Breck showed me this photo a year ago and I just got around to painting it today.  It is the same plane used in the movie "Casablanca", you know, with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman which is one of the great black and whites of all time.  The plane is a Lockheed Electra from around 1939.  It was sltting at the Atlantic Aviations at John Wayne Airport in Orange County.   This  8x6" painting is on a Birch panel mounted to a varnished wooden box:  (SOLD)

 Awakening in the morning and seeing the sun just beginning to rise I realized it had stopped snowing, at least for the time being.  I took this shot in the hopes of a painting.   As I stood  looking out I thought "gosh, no walls"? In Southern California everything is walled in.  You're  lucky if you see, let alone meet, your neighbor, a kind of a commentary on my society as of late.  My son and his wife met their neighbors before they moved in.   Here the property line is open and free, bound only by the respect for one another.  Oil painting on a 6x6" Birch panel that is mounted onto a varnished wooden box: (SOLD)

"UNDERPASS'

I found it relaxing to setback and not think if I have to turn here or there, but just enjoy the ride through the still falling snow.  I also had no-idea of where I was, I couldn't find my way back to my sons house if my life depended on it.  My mission was simply to love the fact of being with him and what he was going to get at the market and cook.  This oil painting is on a 8x6" varnished wooden box: (Sold)

My sons wife Jessica, who has an artistic flair was kind enough to chauffeur me around having an idea of what I might paint.  I sat back in the warmth of the car with its heated seats and clicked away with camera in hand.   Stopping here and there, Jess pointed out this and that.  Then, with great enthusiasm, she spots the red hydrant that jumps out from the gray and white falling snow and slows to a stop.  Taking one shot I said to her, "that's just what I was looking for".  This is a 6x6" oil painted on a varnished Birch wooden box: (Sold)

  My first morning in my sons home, I crept upstairs from the basement "something we don't have in California" and immediately made a pot of coffee.  Cup in-hand I moved quietly around as everyone was still asleep upstairs.  I went to the front door, opening it; only to be greeted by a second etched in glass.  Looking out at the snow and cold within inches of me  while still being protected by the warmth of this house, I smiled and said to myself "here is your next painting." Just a few day's ago my sons wife Jessica drove me around while in Minnesota on what turned out to be the biggest snow storm to hit.  My camera at the ready I clicked away at everything.  This is a school bus making its way, picking up kids and plowing through feet of snow on some small streets that where buried and where the snow plow's don't go.  This painting is an 8x6" oil on Birch wood mounted to a varnished box: (Sold)

"HERE IN MINNESOTA"

Just landed in Minnesota yesterday with my son, picked his car up and drove to his house.  On the way I shot picture after picture of snow, gray skies, traffic and all the things I love to paint.  This morning woke-up to snow and more things to paint.  The look is like my black & white paintings with dark trees and white snow with backgrounds of deep grays.. All things that the doc ordered for my minds-eye.
I have only been here 24 hr and at this point have subject matter to paint for weeks  to come with five more days to go, how thrilled am I... And! dare I forget, I get to spend  time with son, his wife,grandkids and her family.... All good stuff. I will try to up-load some shots without giving-a-way what I will be paintng....  That's it for now.

"LAGUNA CANYON " original oil painting

Many times while riding down this canyon the fog would roll up to greet me.  Oh! There are plenty of sunny days here, but for now I choose this for the mood needed in a memory I have of this place.  You see, most of the canyon has been widened after years of protesting by resident's and local supporters.  Picket sign swinging people would line the sides of this road wanting you to honk in approval of their mantra "no building"... I waved back knowing the inevitable.   After years the builders won.  I must admit, it is far safer now as this once quiet road is now four lanes.  I'm glad I got to see and travel up & down this old road for every now and then I get to paint what once was.  Here is an original 6x6" oil painting on Birch panel, mounted on a varnished wooden box:   (SOLD)

"AWAKENING"

The beginning of the morning was wonderful after the rains had washed the air and all clean. I headed down to Dana Point in Orange County knowing the ocean this week was really going to be turning up the surf.  I took the time to reflect at this and all that is going on in the world and hoped for calmer waters.   It is all so beautiful when one slows-down to see it. Driving back from up northern California on this overcast day, I put my window down on the passenger side and held my camera up to take this shot while coasting at 75 mph... "STARTING TO RAIN"

Driving out of the "U-Rent" with their last car, I pulled out in to traffic just as it starts to rain.  Not knowing where the wipers or defogger is, I strain my eyes to see what's ahead and off into the night I go in search of a motel and sleep.  What a great beginning to what could be a long weekend.  Oil painting on a 8x6" Birch panel mounted to a varnished wooden box: $140 (Sold)

"LIFE LINE"

Looking down the tracks I thought of all the goods, people, supplies and stuff that these steel rails brings to us and binding us all together in one-way or another like a life line now catching the morning sun.  4x12" oil on Birch panel mounted on a varnished wooden box: $150 (SOLD)

"THE SCREEN DOOR"

Just when I thought I was done I go and start work on it again, always in process of tweaking... Well I like this much better, after looking at this painting for sometime and feeling that "I" need something more, I labored for two weeks and then late at night it came to me, I needed something on that wall and in the grass, so back up on the easel I made my move and added the rake,baseball,patio chair and kitchen dinette set.. Now I am done, finished, out-a-hear...

This is the finished painting.  Below you can see the some of the progression but this here is complete.  It is primarily a black & white with shades of gray giving a hint of color in those tones.  The red bicycle is the only real color and to paint this without having it jump out at you there is an under color of dark gray softening the red.  The 36x36" painting is gallery and wrapped and painted on all sides.   For inquires
